The role of effort in determining preferred movement speed.

We compared the metabolic cost of arm reaching to preferred arm reaching durations. The minimum metabolic cost does not agree with the preferred duration. A utility model that sums the reward minus effort, both discounted by time, is able to well predict the preferred movement duration.
